Located in Van Buren County, in Southwestern Michigan, Gobles is located in the heart Michigan’s pristine farmlands. It’s also situated in close proximity to a number of lakes, trails, and a ski area, making it a popular destination for visitors year round.
Settlement in the area started in 1865, when John Goble built a hotel in what is now the downtown area. The land was platted in 1870, and Goble was platted as a village in 1893. Named for its founders, the Goble family, the town was originally called “Gobleville,” however the name was changed on April 10, 1922. In 2012, a massive fire destroyed many local businesses, some of which had been around since the town’s incorporation. However, the town has rebuilt, and the downtown area is more vibrant than ever.
Gobles residents are served by the Gobles Public School, and the district is made up of two buildings: an elementary school, and a joint middle/high school. The school district also offers the Gobles Virtual Academy, which allows students to take online courses which can earn high school and even college credit. Gobles is close to both Interstates 94 and 196, and residents have access to Amtrak service on the Pere Marquette line from nearby Bangor.
Gobles is a popular destination year round thanks to a variety of amenities and outdoor activities offered. The Kal-Haven Trail, a 33.5 mile long stretch of converted railroad track, runs through the town. The trail is extremely popular with hikers and bicyclists in the summer (and horseback riders where permitted), and it is used extensively by snowmobilers in the winter. Gobles is also home to Timber Ridge, a ski resort that features eight lifts, two terrain parks, and a tubing park.
