Lake Geneva Office

Located in Walworth County, Lake Geneva is one of the most popular resort communities in the state of Wisconsin, known for its year-round natural beauty.

The area was first named “Muck-Suck,” which is “Big Foot” in the Potawatomi language. After western settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, the name was changed to Geneva, after the town of the same name in New York. This quickly presented a problem, as the town was often confused with nearby Geneva, Illinois, so the name was changed to Lake Geneva. As the railroads expanded into Wisconsin in the middle of the 19th century, the community became a popular summer retreat destination for Chicagoans looking to escape the city, earning Lake Geneva the title of “The Newport of the West.” While the complexion of the town has changed over the years, its popularity with summer vacationers has not waned.

Lake Geneva Schools is the district responsible for education in the community, as well as for surrounding areas. The district is comprised of five schools: three elementary schools, one middle school, and Badger high school. Interstate access is available via Interstate 43, providing transportation throughout the Midwest, while U.S. Highway 12 and 14 enable travel across the state.

Lake Geneva offers residents ample recreational opportunities thanks to a number of wilderness areas and lakes, including Geneva Lake. With an area of over 8 square miles, the lake is one of the largest in the state, and is a popular destination for summer aquatic recreation, offering boating, skiing, swimming, fishing, canoeing, beach-going, and numerous activities for visitors of all ages. Kilwins, a local favorite, has been serving up handmade ice cream, as well as handmade chocolate and fudge, for nearly 70 years.
