Merrillville is situated along the Erie Lackawanna Trail – a path that connects Crown Point and Hammond and travels through several communities and downtown districts. The paved trail is 17.7 miles and follows a railroad corridor that crosses the Turkey Creek and Oak Savannah Trails.

The Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department maintains the town’s parks and offers a plethora of events and programs such as fitness classes, summer concerts, and movies in the park. Hidden Lake Park is a warm-weather hotspot featuring paddleboards, softball fields, disc golf courses, a playground, fitness trails, and a social center. Meanwhile, golfers can hit the links at Turkey Creek Golf Course.

Among the community’s attractions is the Albanese Candy Factory, which has been serving up award-winning candies for over three decades and is best known for its gummy bears. Shoppers will also find their place at Southlake Mall, which has over 160 retailers, a movie theater, and restaurants.

Merrillville is conveniently centered on the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and I-65. Residents can also access the South Shore Line in downtown Gary.
